About This Collection

How to Choose an Outdoor Sauna

An outdoor sauna turns a patio, deck or corner of the yard into a dedicated place to heat up. Outdoor models are built with weatherproof roofs, thicker walls and exterior-grade wood, and they come in three main styles.

Barrel, cabin or infrared

  • Barrel saunas have a round, compact shape with less empty air to heat. They are a classic choice for traditional heat and steam.
  • Outdoor traditional saunas are cabin-style with an electric heater and sauna stones. They typically run at about 150-195°F and let you pour water for steam.
  • Outdoor infrared saunas use infrared panels at lower air temperatures (about 120-150°F) and heat up quickly.

Planning your installation

  • Foundation: a level, well-drained base such as a concrete pad, pavers or a solid deck.
  • Power: most outdoor saunas need a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Check the heater kW rating on each product page.
  • Permits and placement: check local rules for setbacks and electrical permits before you order, and leave clearance around the sauna for maintenance.
  • Weather: a roof covering or shingles and periodic exterior wood treatment help the sauna last.

Size

Our outdoor saunas range from 2-person models to barrel saunas for 8. If you'll mostly use it alone or as a couple, a 2-3 person sauna heats faster and costs less to run; choose 4 or more seats for families or guests. Our sauna size guide explains how to measure.

Pair it with a cold plunge

Many outdoor setups add a cold plunge tub next to the sauna for hot-cold contrast sessions.
