Barrel Saunas

Outdoor barrel saunas for 2 to 8 people in cedar and pine, with electric sauna heaters for traditional heat and steam.

About This Collection

Why Choose a Barrel Sauna?

A barrel sauna is a round, freestanding outdoor sauna built from interlocking wood staves held together with steel bands. The curved shape means less empty air to heat than a square cabin of similar seating, and heat circulates around the rounded ceiling. Barrel saunas are traditional saunas: an electric heater warms a load of sauna stones, and you can ladle water over them for steam (löyly).

Sizes

Our barrel saunas range from compact 2-person models to 6- and 8-person barrels for families and entertaining. Longer barrels have two facing benches; some include a covered porch or canopy.

Wood options

  • White cedar and red cedar: naturally aromatic and resistant to moisture and decay, the most popular choice for outdoor use.
  • Pine: a lighter-coloured, more budget-friendly option.

See our guide to the best wood for a sauna for the differences.

Heaters and power

The barrel saunas in this collection use electric sauna heaters, typically 4.5-9 kW depending on size. These need a dedicated 240V circuit connected by a licensed electrician. The heater rating is listed on each product page; browse sauna heaters if you are sizing a replacement or upgrade.

Placement

Set the barrel on a level base: a concrete pad, pavers or a sturdy deck, or the cradles supplied with the kit. Leave room around it for the door and maintenance, and check local permit rules. Browse all outdoor saunas to compare barrels with cabin and infrared designs.
