An outdoor sauna is mostly a delivery-and-site-preparation project. The cabin or barrel arrives as a kit or a large unit, and what decides how smoothly it goes is the ground it sits on, the power supply and the local rules. This checklist covers what to settle before you order. It is general guidance, not legal or electrical advice: your local building department and a licensed electrician have the final say.
Do You Need a Permit for a Backyard Sauna?
It depends on where you live. Some towns treat a small freestanding sauna like a garden shed, others count it as an accessory structure with size limits, setbacks from property lines, or an electrical inspection. Homeowner associations can add their own rules. Before you buy, call your local building department and ask:
Is a permit needed for a sauna of this size, and does the power connection need a separate electrical permit?
How far must it sit from the property line, the house and other structures?
Are there rules for wood-burning stoves, chimneys or open flames?
Does my HOA need to approve it?
Write down the answers and keep them with your order. If you are still choosing a model, our best outdoor saunas guide compares the main types.
Choosing the Spot
Pick ground that is level, drains well and is easy to reach for delivery. Think about the walk from the house in winter, shade and privacy, and keep the sauna clear of overhanging branches. Our guide on where to place a sauna covers layout in more detail. Measure gates, steps and paths too: a barrel or a cabin in panels still has to get to the site.
What to Build the Sauna On
Outdoor saunas need a solid, flat base. Common choices are a concrete pad, compacted gravel topped with pavers, or a deck built for the weight. The aim is the same in each case: level, stable and draining away from the sauna so wood does not sit in standing water. Barrel saunas rest on their own support cradles, which the base must carry evenly. Check the manufacturer's instructions on the product page for the footprint and any base requirements, and build to that, not to a guess.
Power: Infrared vs Traditional
Electrical needs differ by type, so check the product page for the exact supply.
Outdoor infrared saunas: the models we list state their power needs on the product page; see the outdoor infrared saunas collection and, for an example, our Sunray Cayenne review.
Outdoor traditional saunas and barrels: these use electric sauna heaters with stones, and the barrels in our range need a dedicated 240V circuit. See outdoor traditional saunas and the barrel sauna buying guide.
Wood-burning: if you prefer a stove, see our wood-burning sauna stoves and ask your local authority about chimney and clearance rules first.
Have a licensed electrician plan the run from your panel to the sauna, including outdoor-rated cable and protection that meets local code. Do this before delivery so you are not waiting for the sauna to sit unused. If you are comparing heater sizes, our electric sauna heaters list the kW rating in each title.
Weather, Ventilation and Care
Outdoor wood sees rain, sun and frost. Cedar is the traditional choice because it resists decay (see best wood for a sauna), but every model still needs a dry base, working vents and the finish the manufacturer recommends. Leave the door ajar after use so moisture can leave, and keep snow and leaves away from the walls. For the inside, follow our how to clean a sauna routine.
Delivery and Assembly Checklist
Confirm the sauna dimensions against your space, using our sauna size guide.
Check whether the unit ships assembled, as panels or as a barrel kit, and who unloads it.
Have the base finished and the electrician booked before the delivery date.
Keep the manual and ask for help from a second person when lifting panels.
Before the first session, check the heater and controls work and read how hot a sauna should be.
